Command Sergeant Major Robert E. Marshall, Sr.

Command Sergeant Major Robert Edward Marshall, Sr., USA, Retired was born on July 27, 1936 to James Cook and Alberta Chestnut Richardson. He departed this life on Monday, October 22, 2018.

 

He attended primary school in Elgin, South Carolina and Brooklyn New York. He is a 1954 graduate of Wilkinson High School in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Upon completing high school, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served his country in multiple tours of duty in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He is the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal. He rose to the rank of Command Sergeant Major and was respected by enlisted personnel and officers alike.

 

CSM Marshall retired after twenty-five years of military service. He enrolled at South Carolina State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering. He went on to earn a Master of Science degree in the same field from Clemson University. Upon completing his formal education, he took a position as a training manager at Georgia-Pacific in Big Island, Virginia. After retiring for the second time, CSM Marshall focused his time on his many home projects and his family.

 

Those who knew and loved CSM Marshall can attest to his strength of character and his dedication to people. He prided himself on his culinary skills and his ability to fix almost anything with an engine. He was an affectionate husband and a committed father, grandfather and great grandfather.

 

He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife Ethel Brown Marshall of the home. Also honoring his memory is the mother of his children Jannie Kennedy Marshall of Charlotte, NC. He is preceded in death by one son, Robert Edward (Evelyn) Marshall, Jr. of Raleigh, NC. His remaining children are Janice M. Spruill of Charlotte, NC; Tony (Barbara) Marshall of Raleigh, NC; Tina Marshall-Bradley (George) of Columbia, SC; and Cheryl A.M. (Randy) Waymer of Charlotte, NC. His pride and joy are his ten grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. Others who hold him dear include a special cousin, Maria McLendon of High Point, NC and other family and friends.
